Study for the citizenship test in Surrey

Many newcomers in Surrey study alone and worry about what the test will ask. A class changes that. You hear the ideas explained out loud, you can ask about the parts that feel unclear, and you practice with questions that are like the questions on the real test. The official test has 20 questions and you need 75 percent to pass, and every question comes from the free Discover Canada guide. Joy teaches that guide from cover to cover so nothing on test day feels like a surprise.

In person classes in the Lower Mainland

Joy teaches live group classes at organization sites in Surrey and across the Lower Mainland, including Delta and Langley and White Rock and Burnaby and Richmond and New Westminster and Coquitlam and Vancouver. Learners sit together, work through the guide in order, and build confidence as a group.

Online learning from anywhere

Groups outside the Lower Mainland can meet Joy online for a live class from anywhere in Canada. Individual learners use the Online Program, with short lessons and flashcards and a quiz for every chapter and full mock tests, on any phone or tablet or computer.

Meet your Surrey citizenship teacher

Joy Dirks is a Surrey teacher and a former Canadian citizenship judge. In her years as a judge she presided at citizenship ceremonies and swore in new citizens, so she has seen test day and ceremony day from the other side of the table. She knows what the test covers and she knows how much it matters to the people who write it.

Joy has taught hundreds of students in groups and she explains big ideas in plain language. She checks understanding as she goes, uses stories and examples to help facts stick, and makes sure every student leaves each session knowing more than when they arrived. Her teaching covers the Discover Canada material only. She does not give advice about citizenship applications.

What you will study in class

  • Who we are as a country and the peoples who make up Canada
